Phillip[1]"Phil" Gilbert, referred to as Mr. Gilbert by students, is the head of sixth form at Rudge Park Comprehensive in The Inbetweeners. He makes his debut episode in The First Day, which is also the first episode of the series.
Gilbert is somewhat of a main character, appearing in many episodes, but few scenes in his appearances.
Personality[]
Gilbert is at most times selfish and has many people whom he dislikes. He seems to be friends with another staff member of Rudge Park, Mr. Kennedy. This is shown because he tries to get him out of situations that will get him out of his job. Multiple examples of this are shown when Kennedy tries to swoove student Neil Sutherland, as he is a paedophile.
Role as Teacher[]
Gilbert hates his job as a teacher and the students there. He shows no interest in their education and welfare. He has said that he does not care about their lives outside of school and that he can be "one truly nasty fucker" when his job is no longer to teach them. He can be seen disobeying school rules on several occasions. He is sadistic towards students who get on his nerves, giving them unfair punishments or threats. An example for this was in the series 3 episode "Will's Dilemma" when students Jay and Neil spot him at a shopping center, called Waterside happily looking at stuffed toys in a card shop. Jay then yelled his name and immediately ran away with Neil afterwoods. The next time they noticed him at school, the pair deliberately dropped a hint about what they saw when Gilbert walked past them the next day at school, by muttering the word "Waterside" at him. Gilbert immediately gave them both a week's worth of after-school detention but ultimately rounded it up to four weeks when they protested.
Gilbert refers to students as their surname most of the time.
A student Gilbert has seen to strongly dislike more than anyone else is Will McKenzie. He even seemed to immediately dislike him with his first interaction with him. Gilbert will commonly insult him and make things bad for him intentionally. In the series 2 episode "Work Experience", Gilbert said that he could not change the work experience placements for Will, but in reality, he most-likely could have, but just wanted to see Will suffer, as he did not like his current placement after there was a "mix-up" with the placements. In this same episode, he then laughed at Will being thrown into a lake. The reason Gilbert despises him is what he says is because Will has an "irritating personality". There are other visible reasons for him to dislike him. Most of the reasons include his traits, such as him being a "grass".
Love Life[]
In The Inbetweeners 2, Gilbert was engaged to Will's mother. He also stated that he is a sexual person, as he mentioned to Will about how he got an erection because of her.
Appearance[]
Gilbert is strongly-built and very tall. His height was mentioned in The Inbetweeners Movie by the student Will McKenzie by him referring to him as "lunatic giant, Mr. Gilbert".

Trivia[]
- Before Greg Davies played Gilbert, he was a real teacher. Davies stated that he enjoys playing Gilbert because it allows him to speak profanely to the students, which is something Davies always wanted to do to his real life students when they misbehaved.
- The character is named after a friend and colleague of series creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley. The real-life Phil Gilbert is a TV producer who went on to work with Beesley and Morris on several shows for their production company, "Bwark Productions".
- Gilbert saying to Will that he could end-up calling him "daddy" could foreshadow him and his mother getting together in The Inbetweeners 2.
